Definition
The recurring civilizational pattern of escaping energy ceilings by climbing to a new substrate. Muscle to steam, steam to electricity, electricity to computation, compute to cognition. Each rung consumes dramatically more energy than the last and rebuilds the Malthusian wall at a higher altitude, raising both the ceiling and the floor of what civilization can sustain.
